Have you read Dave Asprey’s book, The Bulletproof Diet? He suggests starting off the day with a cup of “upgraded” toxin-free coffee blended with grass-fed butter and his Brain Octane Oil (supercharged coconut oil). This health hack supported his own 100 lb. weight loss, sustainable energy, and gut health.
He wasn’t seeing results after trying many diets and strict work-out regimens. Dave invested a lot of his own money to understand why, and the Bulletproof diet was born. Starting off the day with Bulletproof coffee and saturated fat is the basis of this diet.
There are other diet recommendations made throughout the book but today I’m SUPER excited to share with you my butter coffee experimentation.
What makes Bulletproof coffee so special?
Conventional coffee contains a high amount of toxins including mold! These toxins lurking in your everyday cup of joe can cause side effects and also affect your health over time. Bulletproof coffee is lab tested to ensure there are no mold toxins lingering in your morning brew.
Bulletproof coffee supports weight loss and gut health
Cholesterol and fat are beyond important for your body. Most of your hormones are made from fat. Dave wanted to “hack his hunger hormones” and experimented with adding more saturated fat to his diet. This is where the butter comes in. But not just any butter. It needs to be grass-fed butter from cows. Regular butter can cause additional inflammation in your body and that won’t help.
Dave uses coffee to feed “thin bacteria” also known as Bacteroidetes. Studies show that thin people have more of this bacteria while obese have more Firmicutes likes Lactobacillus. How do you feed the “thin bacteria?” Dave explains: “Polyphenols are antioxidants that also function as prebiotics for Bacteroidetes. They’re found in brightly colored vegetables, but the richest source of polyphenols in Western diets by far is coffee!” (pg. 19).
Additionally, he added Brain Octane Oil to support the balance of good and bad bacteria. Brain Octane Oil is a form of coconut oil but significantly more powerful than the regular stuff you buy in the store. Eighteen times more powerful to be exact! Coconut is a natural antifungal and can support gut health. You should start with very small amounts of Brain Octane Oil and work your way up. Otherwise, you could end up with a very upset stomach.
Lastly, when your bacteria are in a good place you can detox more effectively! Goodbye, toxins! It was nice knowing you.

My Bulletproof Experiment
I was so intrigued by the benefits of upgraded coffee like Bulletproof that I decided to give it a try. My goal was to support my gut health, not to lose weight. I haven’t had caffeine is over 5 years so I was mentally prepared for this to go south really quickly.
I didn’t follow the recommended diet but swapped out my daily smoothie for a cup of Bulletproof coffee with 2.5 tablespoons of grass-fed ghee and a teaspoon of Brain Octane Oil. If you are sensitive to dairy like me use grass-fed Ghee instead of regular grass-fed butter. The coffee, butter, and oil need to be blended in a blender.
It tastes very much like a creamy latte.
The caffeine didn’t bother me much the first day but I was very alert and energized. By day two my stomach actually looked and felt more toned. I also lost one pound. The caffeine did become too much for me the second day so I didn’t continue to day 3.
I’m not giving up just yet. Next step is to try Bulletproof decaf coffee! Stay tuned for more experimentation.
