Hi, summer bugs. It’s nearing the end of July already. GASP! I realized I barely dried my hair with a hairdryer this summer and it’s been glorious. I have been opting for natural summer beach waves using minimal non-toxic hair products.
I prefer to have a low maintenance, no fuss beauty routine. My hair is naturally wavy/curly and most of the time it has a mind of its own. I think anyone with naturally curly hair can agree.
I used to do anything to straighten my hair and pray that one day it would just dry naturally straight. Mostly because I hated the maintenance and straight hair always looked in place. Obviously, that never happened. I haven’t used an actual hair straightener in years but I still dry it with a big round brush and hairdryer. Styling can be very time-consuming. This summer I have been too lazy to dry my hair because it doesn’t stay put with the humidity anyway.
Enter Diane Von Furstenburg who has influenced me in so many ways. I credit Diane for inspiring me to embrace my natural hair. She talks about her hair struggles throughout her life in her memoir, “The Woman I Wanted To Be.”It wasn’t until after a photo shoot where a photographer wanted to shoot her with wet hair did she realize her hair could be an “asset.”
He shot me as my hair was drying into its true curls. A few days later, when I saw the two options for the cover, there was no question as to which one was better…The next day I let my hair dry naturally and it was the first time I wore my curls with pride and enjoyed being me.
If you were on the fence on ditching the hair dryer then hopefully Diane inspired you to let it go! At least for the summer.
Back to topic! Now that I have embraced my natural waves for the summer I had to find a few products to tame that frizz and to help detangle the knots after a shower. Here are two inexpensive and effective products to achieve summer beach waves without the chemicals.
1. Honest Conditioning Detangler Sweet Orange Vanilla
This detangling leave-in conditioner is lightweight, inexpensive and perfect to add to your non-toxic haircare arsenal. It has a light vanilla scent that you don’t notice after you comb it through. I spray liberally on my hair when I get out of the shower and tie my hair in a low bun until it air dries a little. Tying it helps keep my frizz to a minimum.
The Honest Company claims to never use any harsh chemicals. The Honest Conditioning Detangler is free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, dyes and formaldehyde carriers.
2. John Masters Organics Sea Mist
There is no such thing as summer beach hair without a little sea salt spray. If you can’t physically get to a beach to dip your head in the ocean, then have no fear, Sea Mist is here. John Masters Organics Sea Mist is extra special because it also contains organic lavender oil which is a calming, fresh scent.
I’ve used this product to achieve many different hairstyles. For summer beach waves, I wait for my hair to air dry a bit before I spray in my hand and scrunch into my curls from the bottom. It doesn’t make your hair hard or crunchy like a hair gel might.
This product contains 3 ingredients: water, sea salt, and lavender oil. It does not have any artificial color, fragrances or preservatives.
Whether your hair is straight, wavy or curly, these products can either give a little beach wave or enhance the waves you have. No beach necessary, although highly preferred.
